On March 1, the Forest Protection Agency of Ho Chi Minh City said that this unit has recently received a Java pangolin voluntarily assigned by Mr. Bui Kim Hoang (61 years old, living in Da Kao ward, district 1) submitted.
Mr. Bui Kim Hoang stated that he works as a parking valet at a parking lot in Quarter 8. (Da Kao Ward, District 1). On the morning of February 28, he was on duty at the parking lot when he heard a loud bang produced by something falling on the corrugated iron roof. Meanwhile, he also heard rustling on the corrugated iron roof.
Mr. Hoang mounted the ladder, put a flashlight on the corrugated iron roof, and discovered a pangolin and a broken fig tree branch. He and another person in the parking lot captured this pangolin and gave it over to authorities, knowing that pangolins are uncommon species. The above pangolin was delivered to the Ho Chi Minh City Forest Protection Agency on February 28.
Mr. Hoang stated that the pangolin was swinging on a fig tree limb when it snapped and landed on the garage’s metal roof. He had no idea where the pangolin from above came from. “There is a vacant area outside the residences, behind the parking lot; I believe it was elevated and fled. I’m hoping that the functional forces nurture it and restore it to nature” – Mr. Hoang stated.
When rangers received the above pangolin for rescue treatment, they established that it was a male Javan pangolin weighing around 6.8kg, with the scientific name Manis javanica belonging to group IB on the list of rare and endangered forest creatures. The rangers initially saw that the pangolin was in poor health.
According to a forest officer, this pangolin may have been caught and kept in captivity unlawfully.
